My mom, Rita Brocato, had eleven grandchildren and they meant the world to her. My son Joey is her oldest grandchild and they have always had a very special relationship. They hung out together quite often, especially at the beach and he worshiped her. During car rides, the music would be cranked up and they would listen to Take it Easy by the Eagles. Joey would call her on the phone every night at 9:00 to check on her and say good night. She spoke about him often and when we would walk the halls with her at her retirement facility, people would stop and say “this must be Joey.” They had no idea who the rest of us were.

For many years, Joey has been a participant in programs run by KEEN Greater DC and they have been a big part of his life. For the past nine years, I have been on the board of directors. Mom was always a big supporter of KEEN.

KEEN Greater DC is a non-profit that provides recreational and sports activities to kids and young adults with disabilities free of charge to the participants. Every summer, KEEN runs an online campaign to raise money to support their programs. This year, in honor of our mother, along with my siblings – John, Roxane and Bill, I have decided to dedicate my online campaign page in her memory.

Mike Brocato.
