Homeward Trails is the ONLY group doing Trap-Neuter-Return in Wise County, VA - one of the most under-resourced communities in Virginia. Our work is truly lifesaving.

In the photo above is Barney - an amazing success story. Barney had been an outdoor cat his whole life - his caretakers remember him as a kitten. And he thrived but had never seen a vet or been neutered. When we met him he was a mess - filthy dirty, covered in matts and fleas and unable to eat properly due to a severe cold. And he's 18 YEARS OLD!!  

After trying for days, we were able to trap him and originally assumed that humane euthanasia was his only option. But with a little bit of slow effort on our part, a wonderful local veterinarian and some trust, we found that Barney just needed an indoor space to live where he could get the loving care he needed - not something that most outdoor cats want. But Barney was old and tired and took to us so well when we went slow. And soon he began to feel better and trust us.  

Around Barney, we were trapping and neutering thousands of outdoor cats who were successfully returned to their caregivers to live out their lives happily, but now vaccinated and microchipped and neutered.

Our work prevents thousands (literally) of kittens from being born outdoors, gets existing cats vaccinated and dewormed and chipped and healthy and means the world to their caretakers, many of whom have to choose between feeding their human families and feeding the cats they care for. True story.
