TWO's 2020 Year in Review!

Update posted 3 years ago

Yes, it was a "queer year" in more ways than one! Get a comprehensive look at the news and culture that made LGBTQ history in 2020 ... now on our website!

This is what we do! This is why you give!

an independent
Blinternational
non-commercial entity
unencumbered by corporate oversight
from the frontlines of the LGBTQ+ movement
a touchstone for queer people still living in fear

The critical work made possible by This Way Out’s listener-donors for the past 32+ years is not close to being finished!Your financial contribution gives This Way Out / Overnight Productions the tools to advance the organization in the ever-changing world of community radio, online radio and podcasting to reach the people who need us the most.

Our listener-donors gave us new tools in 2020 — in spite of everything — to expand our reach online and on social media platforms, and to add closed captions to our NewsWrap video segments on YouTube. The goal for 2021 is to create and distribute Spanish translations of NewsWrap in text and closed captions for YouTube. Imagine if your contribution ultimately led to our being able to distribute Spanish language versions for radio broadcast!

Your one-time $200 donation will launch us into these ambitious new projects.  A sustaining $20 monthly donation will ensure that 2021 will bring an even bolder, more far-reaching This Way Out.

It’s not like life was a bowl of bio-degradable glitter when 2020 began. The United Methodist Church voted to split over LGBTQ equality ... Australian activists rose up against a proposed Religious Discrimination Bill ... transgender migrants were trapped at the US/Mexico border! But there were still queer wins at the Grammys, the Oscars and the Golden Globes, not to mention revival of the ever-popular drag comedy Women Behind Bars! “LGBT Free Zones” proliferated in Poland, but in the US Pete Buttigieg made a historic run for the presidency!

Then life as we knew it came to an end -- COVID-19 took over the world. We found ways of coping with AIDS survivor Rev. Steve Pieters ...  the LGBTQA youth of OutCasting Overtime ... Aussie drag entertainer Penny Tration ... the Boston and San Francisco Gay Men’s Choruses ... “Breko” Brechney of Sydney’s Vivid Festival ... Emma’s Revolution ... and a Virtual Pride Parade!

Queer voices were prominent in the #BlackLivesMatter movement and LGBTQA youth confronted racism. Author and AIDS activist Larry Kramer died, but LGBTQA employment rights lived at the US Supreme Court!

Justice took hits with the passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg … a painful pardon in the Philippines … the tide of homophobia spreading across Poland, Hungary, Nigeria and Uganda. A gay expert in social studies and European politics delivered a profound assessment of international queer politics.

Anti-LGBTQ Amy Coney Barrett rose to the US Supreme Court, but the elections brought the fall of Donald Trump and the rise of queer elected officials!

As always, arts and culture help to keep us sane, and This Way Out is proud to have presented a special performance and conversation with Roger Q. Mason, the world premiere of Camping at the Met

… and our boldest original adventure into the arts to date, the featuring the LGBTQ ally and phenomenal actor Alfre Woodard reading James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time.

Donate any amount — be it $10, $25, $50 or $100 — and add your voice to the enduring legacy of the only international LGBTQ news and information service broadcast on public and community radio stations and other outlets around the world!
