The population of Nkoanekoli Village is roughly 2500. The village sits at the foot of Mt. Meru. After Tanzanian independence from British colonialism, with virtually no government assistance, Nkoanekoli Village was self-determined to raise enough money to build schools, store fronts, a clinic, and initiate construction for a forty thousand liter cistern to be built.

The cistern was the last project to be successfully constructed in 2018. It serves nearly 100 homes at once for 6 hours in a day. Alkaline water flows from an aquifer under Mt. Meru. The water flow is redirected to different areas of the village the throughout the week. When the water is not flowing to an area, some individuals have to travel as far as 2km (1.24 miles) to gather water at the source of clean water in Meru forest, then carry what they are able to lift back home. This is usually one large pail of water that must be rationed for cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and drinking. Even when the water is flowing to any given area, running water in many homes is not a luxury that folks can simply afford.

Women of the village are solely relied upon to gather water for the home. If the mother of the household is unable to gather water, their daughters or other young girls have to make the hike to fetch and carry water. Often traveling by foot alone, unfortunately, this trek to gather one of life's necessities has proven itself to be dangerous for the young girls.

Not only is water harvested for personal consumption, but the sisters often travel the 2km distance multiple times a day to harvest water to sell to individuals that cannot get water for themselves.

Completing this project and providing access to clean, fresh, running water to the more than 2,500 residents of Nkoanekoli Village will drastically improve the quality of life for many generations to come.
