My son Paul (shown in photo) in the midst of his senior year of high school went from being a IUPUI bound Bepko Scholar and basketball-dunking player to within months having a severe global brain damage and needing a walker to get around. That was almost five years ago. College never happened. Today after years of treatment and wandering through a largely unhelpful medical community we are finally starting to see signs of hope.

Lyme disease and the often associated co-infections that come with an infection left Paul with extensive physical and cognitive damage. Years of recovery were lost because of a lack of understanding or known resources in the health-care community. Today organizations like Indiana Lyme Connect are linking together resources and support communities to help patients, their families, and local health-care providers. My hope is that current and future sufferers of Lyme disease, particularly here in Indiana, will not suffer needlessly because they and their care-givers have access to information and local resources.

Paul is hoping to return to IUPUI in the fall of 2017 or soon after.

Paul is only one of my four children suffering from this devastating illness.
