Established in 1997 as the Black Women Film Preservation Project, the organization was founded to preserve the voice of Black women in film and increase the numbers of women in the entertainment industry. Rebranded as The Black Women Film Network (BWFN), our mission is to empower women of color to “tell the untold stories” through feature films, documentaries, television and digital media. We provide scholarships and effective programs that develop film entrepreneurs, engage new audiences and bring awareness to the positive portrayal of women of color in content.
Black women shattered Hollywood glass ceilings in 2020. Alana Mayo is president of MGM's Orion Pictures. Nicole Brown heads TriStar Pictures. Channing Dungey, who became the first Black president of ABC Entertainment in 2016, added another first as Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group. Nigerian-born Pearlena Igbokwe is now the first woman of African descent to head a major U.S. television studio as Chairman of Universal Studio Group. Vanessa Morrison is president of streaming at Walt Disney. Tara Duncan is the president of Freeform and Wonya Lucas oversees the Hallmark Channel.
In 1997, when the Black Women Film Network started its journey, Hollywood looked nothing like this. As an organization dedicated to representation and leadership of Black women on the screen, behind the camera, in the c-suite and beyond for nearly 25 years and counting, our mission of supporting, nurturing and championing Black women in film and TV has never been more rewarding. From that first role to Oscar winner, from staff writer to showrunner, from p.a. to director, from assistant to president, we celebrate it all through our ever-growing social media networks to our centerpiece Black Women Film Summit. All year-round, we engage, inspire and push Black women in this expanding industry further. We, at BWFN, have never been more excited about what the future holds for Black women in this industry and invite you to partner with us as we work to ensure that the next generation of Black women have no ceilings to shatter, only dreams to fulfill!
