Early in my teaching career, I learned from some of my students that they rarely went outside to play. Their only meaningful time outside was recess. That’s why, for almost 30 years, I regularly gave the homework assignment: Play outside. And yes, there were parents who would call me and ask me if I were serious. And there were some children who said, “I don’t know what to do outside.” But they learned, by exploring their own backyards.

From this experience with students, their parents, and with other teacher’s uneasiness being outdoors, I made it my mission to take students outside often for learning experiences in the natural world. In turn, students led their parents outside. Then, I wanted to help teachers gain confidence in taking their students outdoors. Enter KAEE.  

In 2010, a colleague urged me to attend and present at a KAEE conference. There, I found my people.  KAEE has given me many opportunities to learn from and lead environmental education workshops and courses designed for formal and non-formal educators. The leadership and dedication of the staff to provide professional development and networking opportunities for educators throughout the Commonwealth is invaluable! 

As KAEE empowers educators, they in turn are empowering young ‘saplings’, like my own grandchildren, to grow into environmentally literate Earth citizens. Please join me in supporting this mighty valuable cause!
