A test of a people is how they behave towards the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old are the true goldmines of a culture.
The Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties has for many years for Rosh Hashanah, Chanuka and Passover held holiday luncheons for Jewish people 80+ years young who live in nursing homes, in assisted living or independently. All the rabbis attend. They receive a kosher lunch, fantastic entertainment and, most important of all, traditions of the holidays. For some of these elderly, this is the only time that they will experience the traditions of the holiday.
