Please help sustain our community. Join your neighbors in raising $5000 to support Project for Pride in Living (PPL)!

Solhem will match all donations up to $2500 to create a fitness center for the residents at Charlotte Commons in the Como East neighborhood of Minneapolis.

The building is located in the Minneapolis East Como neighborhood. It provides 35 units of affordable and supportive housing to both families and formerly homeless individuals. The families served at Charlotte Commons are predominantly people of color impacted by poverty, homelessness, and other complex barriers to housing, economic and family stability. PPL provides integrated onsite support to residents including one-to-one case management, and youth & parenting services.

The addition of the fitness center will offer residents the opportunity to make healthy choices. This is an important component of PPL’s services, as they strive to  build hope and self-reliance with the individuals and families in our communities  that need it most.

Here is how PPL describes their work:

"Project for Pride in Living, Inc. (PPL) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering low-income people to become self-reliant through integrated services. PPL builds the hope, assets, and self-reliance of individuals and families who have lower incomes by providing transformative affordable housing and employment readiness services. PPL began as an affordable housing developer in 1972, and has since become a robust multi-service agency that today serves more than 13,000 low-income people annually. PPL has had significant organizational transformations throughout our history. Response to community need is the root of these evolutions.

  • 1980s: With housing as the bedrock, it soon became clear that low-income families needed more training and support to ensure self-sufficiency. In response,  PPL launches job training and the Self-Sufficiency Program.
  • 1990s: Driven by residents, PPL invests in education and begins youth services to build a foundation for lifelong success.
  • 2000s: The philosophy of integrated services takes hold across PPL, embracing that our best response is a holistic approach to help people achieve  self-reliance. A 2008 merger transforms our youth education efforts, adding a preschool and two high schools.
  • 2010s: PPL grows again via mergers, bolstering services for people impacted by homelessness.

As PPL looks to the future, we see new challenges, but we also see possibilities that have the potential to be another transformative moment in PPL’s history.

PPL now serves thousands of people throughout the Twin Cities metro region.
