Good understanding of ocean and coastal areas is needed for every nation of the world that has a coastline, yet many developing countries lack adequate professionals to teach and mentor students in all relevant topics.  Since 2009, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) has been sending Visiting Scholars to developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to help develop the capacity of young scientists in these regions to study their ocean areas and provide information necessary for better understanding and improved management. Thirty-nine Visiting Scholars have served in 20 different developing countries.  SCOR received 23 applications for the 2020 Visiting Scholars program, but can only support five applicants with funds from traditional sources.  We are seeking donations to support one additional teacher.
