The Anglers are a group of over 1,000 men and women dedicated to preserving and protecting the Au Sable River - one of Michigan's true treasures. We have fought and won for no kill fishing in the "Holy Water" and we stopped oil and gas drilling in the Mason tract. We helped fund the removal of the Salling Dam, which allowed fish passage up as far as Fredric, and lowered the temperature of water in the upper river to more suitable levels for trout. In a major victory, we led a legal action to stop the expansion of the fish hatchery in Grayling. As was being proposed, the hatchery would have been the source of huge amounts of pollution - including fish excrement and excess feed The hatchery is now being focused as a tourist attraction and educational center.
We are now participating in actions to identify and control PFAS contamination throughout the Au Sable system.
We sponsor a youth writing contest focusing on Au Sable river subjects, with winners each receiving new computers.
Our major volunteer activity of the year is our annual river cleanup. Each year, over 200 men, women and children walk the river, collecting trash which accumulates over the summer. Tons of litter have been removed.
In conjunction with other groups in the area, river studies, and habitat improvements are funded each year.
We have no paid staff - all activity is guided by volunteers, but work crews, outside experts and materials required are expensive.
We hope you will join us in participating in Rock Financial's contest. Your contribution may result in substantial matching from Rock.
