I first got involved with the Workers’ Center almost 15 years ago and consider it my political home and extended family. We’ve been through some ups and downs in all those years, and from my perspective we’ve come through them with greater clarity about the kind of organizing that we need in order to bring about truly transformative change. In this pandemic year, as the multiple crises of poverty were laid bare, we continued to build a grassroots movement for universal healthcare, pivoting to online meetings to stay connected and to actions like car caravans to draw attention to healthcare profiteers.

We also took advantage of this time to hold a leadership institute named for Peg Franzen, a wise mentor to me and to many. Peg always talked about the importance of developing leaders  and the capacity of all people to contribute to a collective effort. I think she would be pleased—as I am—to see so many new members taking on leadership within the VWC.

I’m excited about the in-person organizing that’s happening around the state, our bimonthly political education offerings, and the People’s Hearing on the Right to Health at the end of June. That hearing exemplifies one of our core principles—maintaining political independence.

We are committed to being politically independent so we can take stands and put pressure on power holders based on our experiences and principles, not on what is expedient. This is where you come in! Though we are largely member run, we do have expenses. To maintain our independence we count on supporters like you to help fund our work. Your donation in any amount will help us continue organizing for a more just and democratic Vermont.
