Caregivers of children with special needs experience dramatic negative impacts, which have been well-documented over the years, with conclusive results: parents of children with disabilities are at high risk for serious health issues, both physical and mental, due to increased exposure to stressors, such as financial strain, time demands, physical care, and anxiety about the child’s well-being (Hung, Wu, Chiang, Wu, & Yeh 2010; Herring et al. 2002). Caring for oneself first allows for a healthier caregiver who can provide better care for the child; that is the purpose of respite care.
CSP knows that respite care remains one of the greatest needs in the disabilities community, as it is one of the key components of our mission. The completion of this program and the opening of its doors to families would mean realizing our goal of providing a place of rest that directly impacts parents and their children, of giving hope to families who feel like they cannot take another step. Finally, CSP would have the ability to offer one of the best solutions to one of our families’ greatest problems.
