Imagine wanting to read a bedtime story to your child, fill out a job application, or understand a doctor’s instructions—but not having the literacy skills to do so. For many adults in our community, this is a daily reality.
About 1 in 10 (10%) of adults in Wayne County have not received their high school diploma or equivalent (censusreporter.org). These struggles are very real for members of our community.
Our Adult Literacy Program exists to break down those barriers. Through one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, and guided learning, we help adults:
Prepare for their GED and open new career and educational opportunities.
Learn to read and write with confidence, building independence and self-esteem.
Develop English language skills so they can communicate, connect, and thrive in their communities.
When you support adult literacy, you’re not just helping one person—you’re transforming entire families. A parent who learns to read can help their child with homework. An adult who earns their GED can secure better employment. A new English speaker can participate fully in community life.
📘 $500 sponsors textbooks, helps to pay testing costs and application fees for the GED test, or transportation for a learner to get to their test.
📗 $1,000 sponsors a class series in financial literacy, health literacy, or workplace skills.
📙 $5,000 sponsors 2 adult learners for weekly classes for a year, or sponsor a workplace readiness or peer tutoring class for local teens.
Together, we can ensure every adult has the right to learn, grow, and succeed.
