I believe in magic. I've seen it happen at Camp Starlight, in the way that children play together, support each other, and find their confidence. Yes, it's just summer camp, but it's also a welcoming and safe space for children affected by HIV/AIDS and the stigma against the LGBTQIA+ community. Camp Starlight is a place that all kids (and adult volunteers!) can be themselves.
Camp Starlight has been providing a free, weeklong summer camp experience since 1999, and after expanding our eligibility in 2025 to include rainbow families, interest in camp grew exponentially.
I have been volunteering with camp since 2014, but this past year has been different. Under the current US administration, circumstances are dire for LGBTQIA+ families. Safe and welcoming spaces like Camp Starlight are truly needed, now more than ever. On their evaluation last year, a 9-year-old wrote about their camp experience:
“Everyone is so inclusive and kind. You will never feel lonely … you don’t have to hide who you are. People [are] going through the same thing.”
