Meet Lare, a bright 13-year-old from Tsevie, Togo, in West Africa. When we first met him, Lare was falling behind in reading, math, and science, not because he lacked potential, but because he lacked access to resources. His school had no Internet, library, electricity, running water, and extra support at home.

Thanks to donors like you, everything changed. Lare now spends his afternoons at Empowering African Youth’s Learning Center. In this safe space, he receives free and personalized tutoring from licensed teachers, uses computers and, Internet, and connects with caring teachers and hundreds of children. He says:

“This center is like my second home. I come here to study, ask questions, and the teachers help me understand the difficult things in science and math. Now I get good grades in class.”

Now, meet Cristina, a 7th-grade student in Manassas, Virginia. When Cristina joined our program, she was reading at a second-grade level. She felt embarrassed in class and avoided reading aloud. But through weekly online reading sessions, Cristina received personalized support, practiced fluency, improved her comprehension and vocabulary, and built confidence.

55Today, Cristina is reading at a 5th-grade level, participates in class discussions, and even helps her peers with their reading. Her teacher says:

“Cristina’s transformation is incredible. She went from hiding in the back of the room to volunteering to read aloud. She’s proud of herself, and so are we.

In less than a year, Lare and Cristina achieved what once seemed impossible, advancing their reading levels by two grades. Lare also mastered key math concepts and discovered a passion for science. Today, he dreams of becoming a teacher, so he can help other kids succeed, just as you helped him. Your gift makes transformations like these possible.
