In these horrifying times, it has become ever more clear that only the "Revolution of Values" that King died fighting for will save our lives, our communities, our peoples and our planet.
This system is literally killing us wholesale in this country and around the world and destroying our planet. No reform or concession, and neither party of Wall Street, will stop this - because they exist to defend this murderous system. As history teaches us, only a mass movement from the bottom will bring about the fundamental change that our lives and futures and that of our planet depend on.
My organization, Put People First! PA, along with the Nonviolent Medicaid Army (NVMA) which we are building across the country, the National Union of the Homeless and the Poor People's Campaign, of which we are a part, are committed to building this movement, to organizing and uniting the poor and dispossessed of the US, the 99% of us who have no future in this system, across all of our differences - race, religion, generation, immigration and documentation status, political party, geography, who we did or didn't vote for, etc - to become the "unsettling force" that King believed could have the power to end the interconnected evils of this system.
Our movement takes up the work that King was killed for - the work of building a massive, diverse, politically independent movement of the working class for fundamental change, for the “Revolution of Values” that King called for, that we believe and that history tells us is the only thing that will truly end the horrific conditions we are seeing grow worse every day in our country and globally.
Please join us in this movement and please support us in our daily work to build it. Following is more background on who we are, and highlights of our work this year.
Put People First! PA (PPF-PA) is a politically independent organization of everyday people from across PA uniting for Healthcare As A Human Right! Our organization is 13 years old, and we are completely member-led and staff free. That means our funds go towards helping members during moments of crisis, sending folks across the state, country and overseas to study and exchange with others, and to covering the everyday costs of our organizing - Zoom, printing, providing food and childcare, and more!
We’ve just completed another powerful year of organizing in Pennsylvania, and helping to build and lead the national Nonviolent Medicaid Army (NVMA). Now more than ever our work of organizing the politically independent poor and dispossessed is needed. With the Great Medicaid Purge beginning in 2023, the Biden administration, with bipartisan support, cut 25 million people from Medicaid. This year, the Big Beautiful Bill for Billionaires will add at least another 15 million. This means over 1 in 10 people in Pennsylvania will have been denied their basic human right to Healthcare.
The war on the poor has gone on far too long and we won't be silent any more. Here are some of the highlights from our work this year to fight these bipartisan policies of social murder and to organize and unite those most directly impacted to lead this movement.
- Helped organize and build the Nonviolent Medicaid Army (NVMA), the only politically independent organization of people on or excluded from Medicaid in the country, to hold both parties accountable for their violations of our human right to health care, and to organize people struggling in our healthcare system to fight for our rights to healthcare and all of our needs - from every part of Pennsylvania and the Northeast, to the Rust Belt and Appalachia, to the deep South, Oklahoma and Texas, to Wyoming and California, and to immigrant communities across the country fighting for their rights to housing, healthcare, safety, family and freedom from fear.
- Coordinated over 20 simultaneous actions across the country for our Nonviolent Day of Action! These included vigils, healthcare caravans, rallies outside hospitals under attack and our first civil disobedience risking arrest in Delaware County to protest the closure of Chester-Crozer Hospital.
- Held two NVMA Songbook Tours across the Northeast and Midwest and hosted leaders from the Kairos Center for Rights and Religions as they launched We Cry Justice!
- Coordinated over 800 calls to Congress, educating and organizing folks across key constituencies in PA and other states.
- Held our annual Membership Assembly with over 180 participants and 40 children, including leaders from partner organizations from over 17 states and 3 countries, taking up the task of building the unity of the poor and dispossessed through human rights struggles.
