Yep. I'm going again: riding to Maine on a bike to raise money for cancer research and survivor support.
I did this for the first time last year after my father-in-law was diagnosed with two different types of cancer. It felt like something I could do to help when we felt so helpless. And we were able to raise over $220,000!
But this year will be different.
Because, I'm being honest, I also did the ride last year just to see if I could. I love cycling and I love a challenge, so I wanted to try. And it was a great experience! We saw beautiful scenery, and ate our way up the eastern United States, and had amazing (holy?) moments of laughter and tears, and shared stories of suffering and hope, and I even met Patrick Dempsey!
And all of that will be the same this year. But it will be different, too. Because last year I rode for the challenge. This year I'm riding in gratitude.
Around a dinner table during the ride last year, Suzy was telling Jim Kaltenbach about her dad's cancer journey. Jim offered to connect him with doctors at the Prisma Cancer Institute, and a few months later (after some follow-up phone calls and appointments), my father-in-law's entire course of treatment shifted. He was able to have a surgery that radically transformed his prognosis and quality of life.
I am deeply grateful for the research and care this fundraising effort supports, and even more so for the community of people who are a part of it. I am so excited to participate again this year, and I hope you will join me in gratitude and give generously to support C3!
