Stronger Together
Our dear friends, Matt and Emily Thompson, are planning a trip to Togo in April 2026. During their visit, we will break ground and begin construction of the new school building bringing our shared vision to life. Matt and Emily have championed this vision with extraordinary heart, leading the fundraising effort for Ecole Tournesol's new school building and inspiring others to join in. We are deeply grateful for their support, their generosity, and their friendship. They will share updates and reflections from their time in Togo on this page so that all our contributors can be part of this exciting journey.
Danielle Naugle and Kodjo Amoudji met in 2007 when Danielle was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kodjo’s village in Togo. They moved to the US, got married, had kids, and, in 2021, they moved their family to Togo so that their children would have the opportunity to embrace their Togolese heritage, learn French and Ewe, and feel as at home in Togo as they do in the United States. Three days after they arrived, they opened the doors to their community school, Ecole Tournesol, with the slogan: “Learning is Fun!”
OUR MISSION
The mission of Ecole Tournesol is to provide quality bilingual (French and English) education to children in the Aképédo community in Togo. This means small classroom sizes, qualified teachers, and a safe and healthy learning environment. The school follows the Togolese curriculum in French, enriching it with access to additional resources and infusing it with English beginning in preschool.
OUR GROWTH
In 2021, we started with 11 preschoolers. This school year (2025-2026) we have 190 students across two pre-school and four primary school classrooms. We plan to add a classroom each year until we have a complete preschool, primary school, middle school and high school. We will soon outgrow our current space.

Help us raise $100,000 to build a new school building! The building on the left of the digital mock-up is already built. The $100,000 is to construct the building on the right and complete the school!
