For the past 4 years, Em, the kids, and I have been a part of South Loop Community Table. More of a dinner party than a soup kitchen, SLCT is a place where about eighty of Chicago’s unhoused folks gather weekly to get a warm home-cooked meal, a hot cup of coffee, a friendly conversation, or game of Connect Four. We’ve cooked hotdogs on the grill in the summer, watched the Bears in the Fall, and handed out donated boots in the winter. Most of all, it’s become a community that Em, Hendrik, Tella, Wren, and I care deeply about.
Financially, it runs on a shoestring.
That’s why, on Friday, February 20th, Tella and I will join a few other volunteers for our annual Sleep Out for Homelessness. We’re pitching a tent, climbing in our sleeping bags and spending the entire night outside –both to show solidarity with those who don’t have the choice to take shelter this winter, and to raise money.
The funds we raise will go directly to SLCT’s parent organization, Care for Friends, which connects some of Chicago’s most vulnerable residents with meals, clothing, medical care, and case management.
