Help me keep the community protected with Water Safety

My name is Serena Tombesi, and I have the privilege of serving as the Aquatics Director at the Arthur J. Glatfelter YMCA and the Graham Aquatic Center Outdoor Pool.

My story with the YMCA began years ago, right here in the Philly pool. That’s where I first fell in love with the water—and where I began to understand just how powerful it can be. From a young age, I was always drawn to aquatics, even teaching my peers how to swim during gym class. What started as a passion quickly grew into a purpose.

Today, that purpose drives everything I do.

At the YMCA, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn to swim. Swimming is more than just a skill—it’s a life-saving ability, a source of confidence, and a gateway to lifelong health and opportunity. Water safety opens doors, builds courage, and creates pathways for individuals of all ages to grow and thrive.

I’ve seen firsthand how access to swim lessons and aquatic programs can change lives. I’ve watched children overcome fear, families gain peace of mind, and individuals discover strength they didn’t know they had. This is the heart of the YMCA mission—building stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

During Give Local York on April 30 and May 1, I invite you to support the YMCA of the Roses. Your generosity helps ensure that every child has the chance to learn to swim, every family feels safe around water, and every member of our community has the opportunity to belong and succeed.

Together, we can continue to make waves that last a lifetime.

Thank you for being part of this mission.
