Our Trails UP team is on the ground in southwestern Virginia for another Trap-Neuter-Return event. Our work in the community is never as straight forward as providing spay and neuter for cats. We're helping to alleviate suffering, provide caregivers support often when they're almost completely overwhelmed, and advocating for the animals who can't speak for themselves.
One of our caregivers suddenly lost her father just a couple of weeks ago and her world has been turned upside down. She now has a farm and a colony of almost 30 cats to take care of, all while dealing with her own grief. When we arrived to help her, we found several kittens suffering with severe eye infections. She had been trying to doctor them the best she could - but life is so overwhelming for her right now. She can't stand to see any animals suffering so reached out for our help. While we work to trap and TNR her adult cats, the kittens need critical care NOW. Your support gives these kittens a chance to not only keep their eyesight, but also to live. As the temperatures climb this summer - the suffering will only increase without our support.
We're also working to help several dogs this trip. Two that just showed up on someone's property after being abandoned. That caregiver is doing the best she can to help them, but one is pregnant and we don't want her to have her babies in a field or under a shed. We were alerted to another situation where two dogs are chained with infrequent visits from their owner. We've already reached out to animal control to have them check out the situation and will work to provide whatever assistance we can.
Walter is another special cat we're helping this trip. He has a horrible wound on the back of his head that just won't heal. As it's gotten hotter, Walter has gotten weaker - rarely leaving his spot below his caregiver's barbecue. Again - his caregiver wanted to help him, they just weren't able to afford getting him to the vet. In addition to getting neutered and his vaccines, the vet will get Walter the care he needs to be on the road to recovery.
Your support literally changes these animals lives and ensures we can continue our Trails UP work in these under-served communities. No one else is on the ground monthly providing not only spay and neuter, but also food and supplies for caregivers and vetting for sick and injured animals. But we can't do it without you.
