Our Story
Run for Your Life 5K has always been about more than a race. It began as a way to honor a life lost to substance use disorder, and provide hope and support for others still struggling. For many years the race was organized by Moira Satre, founder of CAYA (Come As You Are), in loving memory of her son Bobby, who tragically lost his life after a battle with substance use disorder. Moira became a powerful advocate for prevention, recovery, and support for individuals and families affected by substance use in our community. Although Moira remains actively involved in this mission, she has entrusted Verdun Adventure Bound with carrying the race forward; preserving the mission behind it while expanding its impact throughout our region.
Today, the Run for Your Life 5K directly supports Project SOAR, Verdun’s no-cost post-rehabilitation program for individuals navigating the difficult transition following treatment or incarceration. This period can be one of the most vulnerable points in a person’s recovery, when the risk of relapse and overdose is high and a strong support system makes all the difference. Project SOAR meets people where they are, providing structure, community, and practical tools for building a sustainable life in recovery. Participants take part in outdoor team challenges, wellness routines, mindfulness practices, and hands-on skills training. Through partnerships with Rappahannock Goodwill Industries, S.E.E. Recovery Center, and Warrenton Woods Rehabilitation Center, the program takes a person-centered approach to supporting the individuals well-being.
Run for Your Life carries Bobby’s story forward by helping create opportunities for others to find their way forward. What began as one family’s way of honoring a life lost has grown into a community effort to support all individuals in recovery.
