Birdie is only two years old, but tonight she sits alone on a cold shelter floor in southern Virginia, her body heavy with life she didn’t ask for and doesn’t understand. The sweetest Lab/Pit mix with gentle eyes and a swollen belly just weeks from giving birth was surrendered simply because she became pregnant, left behind when she needed care the most. She is scared, overwhelmed, and running out of time. No dog should have to bring puppies into the world in a loud, stressful shelter, surrounded by noise instead of comfort, fear instead of safety. As each day passes, Birdie grows closer to delivering her babies behind bars, with no soft place to rest and no one to protect them. Homeward Trails is desperate to get her out before that happens.
