Running Through the Twin Cities for the People Who Call It Home
On October 4th, I'm running the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. 26.2 miles through Minneapolis and St. Paul.
As part of the journey, I'm running to raise money for the immigrant communities of the Twin Cities. The neighbors, workers, and families whose lives were upended by Operation Metro Surge earlier this year. Thousands of people were detained. Kids missed school. Businesses were shuttered. Families were torn apart.
Our course runs through many of the same neighborhoods still recovering from that trauma. I am hoping that every mile I log in training between now and October is, in a small way, a mile run in solidarity with the people who make Minneapolis/St. Paul what it is.
The donations of this fundraiser will go to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM). The center provides free immigration legal representation to low-income immigrants and refugees in Minnesota. When someone is detained or facing deportation, ILCM attorneys show up. In a single recent year they handled over 3,000 cases, affecting more than 9,000 family members. Every dollar funds that legal defense.
I'm not an elite runner. I'm a Chicagoan who cares about immigrant communities, both at home and in the city I'll run through this fall. If you've ever thought about what you can do, this is one concrete way to help.
Any amount matters. Thank you for running this with me.
