Louisiana families face immediate threats from the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” which will impose billions in new state costs while creating stricter rules for essential programs. The law expands SNAP work requirements to able-bodied adults aged 18–64 (up from 18–55) and narrows dependent exemptions: only caregivers responsible for children under 14 remain exempt. Affected individuals must now work, volunteer, or participate in training at least 80 hours per month (roughly 20 hours/week). Local food banks are bracing for increased demand as these changes take effect.

Medicaid is also under pressure. Federal cuts and administrative changes threaten coverage for thousands, potential hospital and nursing home reductions, and stricter eligibility checks. Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments that support low-income patients are also be reduced, placing essential health services at risk for some of Louisiana’s most vulnerable communities.

ACORN International is mobilizing to protect these benefits. We are training local organizers to help residents navigate the new bureaucracy, understand eligibility, and maintain access to SNAP, Medicaid, and other critical programs. By connecting neighbors and equipping community leaders with advocacy tools, we can pressure state and local officials to safeguard funding, maintain services, and prevent vulnerable families from falling through the cracks.

Your support makes this campaign possible. Donations and volunteer involvement fund organizer training, community outreach, and advocacy work to fight federal and state cuts. Together, we can defend benefits, ensure access to food and healthcare, and strengthen Louisiana communities facing the harshest impacts of new federal policies.
