The photo I chose for my Give for Good page this year is one that represents a moment in time when I looked around me, taking in the gravity of the steps thousands of us were taking in unison and thought, "how lucky, how incredibly privileged am I to walk the path that those brave foot soldiers walked." They marched, risking their lives to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, meeting the hate, brutality, and ignorance they faced with calm, courage, and a fierce determination to demand what they should have already been given as American citizens -- the right to vote.
But right now, 61 years after their bravery led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we’re seeing a massive surge in voter suppression that threatens to turn our country back centuries. My passion for this work comes from a lifelong mission to understand and fight the cruel injustices our country was built on, while protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms our system got right.
That’s why I’m asking you to join me for Give for Good Louisville today. Your donation directly funds ACLU of Kentucky's work, keeping us on the front lines defending the constitutional rights of ALL Kentuckians.
If you know me, you know being part of the incredible ACLU team is so much more than a job. As a lifelong Kentuckian, our mission and work is deeply personal. My own personal recovery journey fuels my dedication to reducing stigma, breaking down systemic barriers, and expanding freedoms for justice-involved individuals and fellow Kentuckians in recovery. Whether we're fighting for reproductive rights, maternal health, racial justice, or LGBTQ+ equality, remaining in the middle of this work is essential to my identity as a women, mother, and advocate for those who are not always able to advocate for themselves.
So, I invite you to join me in continuing the fight of those brave foot soldiers who marched across that bridge in Selma -- we cannot give into fear or lose hope. We have to see the humanity in every person and protect one another, especially when it's hard.
