Danielle Burton part of the Innovation & Strategy team cannot wait to “be able to wander around individually” and having a choice in how she wants to interact with the new museum being built at the American Printing House for the Blind, The Dot Experience. As an individual who is deafblind, Danielle’s experiences with museums have been limited. While attending museums in the past she had to rely on friends to describe what they were seeing and experiencing. While visiting other cities when reaching out to a museum to visit she was told she needed to schedule 2 weeks in advance to get the accommodations that she would need to experience the museum.

Danielle is also part of the Inclusive Prototyping Team whose members include those that are blind, deaf, deafblind, wheelchair users, cane and guide dog users, neurodiverse and more. This team meets regularly with Solid Light the museum design firm based in here in Louisville, KY ensuring that everything in the museum will be accessible to all. Danielle says it is a “really neat experience having that direct input”. When asked if she feels like her voice has been heard in the design process, she said it has been fascinating to see what the design team is able to do once they receive the feedback from the prototyping group and the changes the design team makes to ensure The Dot Experience is more accessible.

As it gets closer to the opening of The Dot Experience we hope that you will support APH’s goal to make The Dot Experience the most accessible museum with your contribution today during Louisville’s Give for Good Day!
