The COVID-19 pandemic spotlighted the necessity of a prepared public health system, comprehensive health coverage, easily accessible health care, and responsive policy makers. Without these fundamentals, Georgia will continue to fall short of the healthy, equitable future that all of us deserve.
GHF fights for the laws and policies needed to ensure that these building blocks are in place for all Georgians. At the state Capitol and in other halls of power, GHF works for a day when all Georgians have access to the quality, affordable health care and supports they need to live healthy lives and contribute to health of their communities.
Our approach weaves together public education, story collection, policy research and analysis, coalition building, and community organizing. Together with the Georgians most impacted by pressing health issues, we lead policy advocacy campaigns that meaningfully improve health and well-being in the Peach State.
- After seeing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Georgia’s communities of color, GHF worked with two partner groups to create an easy-to-use advocacy portal that allows Georgians to contact their district public health directors about prioritizing racial equity in local vaccine distribution efforts. The portal was recognized by Anti-Racism Daily as a promising practice for addressing racial inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- From November 2019 to September 2020, GHF and partners mobilized more than 4200 Georgians to submit comments about how the Governor’s waiver plans would impact them or their loved ones. These comments make up an impressive legal record that can be used by courts and federal health officials to protect consumers from the most harmful provisions of the waivers and prompt Georgia leaders to reconsider their plans. In our Outnumbered analysis, GHF found that commenters preferred Medicaid expansion to the Governor’s plan by a 9-to-1 margin.
- GHF broke a five-year impasse on the issue of surprise out-of-network medical billing to pass Surprise Billing Consumer Protection Act. By bringing together nationally recognized experts and the leading legislative champions on the issue, and working closely with the Governor’s office and other health care stakeholders, GHF led the effort to protect 2.5 million Georgians from unfair surprise out-of-network medical bills that stress Georgia families and impair their abilities to succeed financially.
