I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation (CM) in late 2011. After three years of doctor appointments, misdiagnosis and being told I was a hypochondriac, finally I had an MRI with a radiologist that had recently learned about CM. I found an amazing neurosurgeon in NYC and had my first brain surgery in 2012. Complication from the first surgery, brought me back to NYC 2 weeks after my first surgery. It was touch and go for a bit, but I came through it and was able to live my dream of being dancer for the NBA Detroit Pistons.
I suffered some intense bullying in high school due to the symptoms of my disease. I understand now it was simply lack of education for those that made fun of me, but as currently a high school teacher, I am beyond passionate about educating anyone and everyone on the burden patients when they battle a little known rare disease. So much is yet to be learned about CM through the current research efforts of some incredible scientist but it is very costly to be able to do this heroic work.
I currently am the Co-Director of the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America (CCWAA) in Michigan. We have our 13th annual walk at Stony Creek Metroparks - Eastwood Beach on Saturday, September 19, 2020.
