The mission of Illinois Science Council (ISC) is to raise understanding and appreciation for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and reduce the intimidation many feel about those topics through engaging, live programs with scientists. Our programs are open to all but our focus is on adult audiences – those who are not served by the extensive student-focused STEM offerings available. We want to reach those who are science-curious as well as those who perhaps had little, or bad, experiences with science and think it’s too difficult or boring to prove that it is exciting and fun.
ISC’s work falls through the cracks of grant support as most science outreach funding is for K-12 programs, and arts and culture funding excludes science. Science literacy is critically important in our society and facing constant challenges. ISC plays an important role in Chicago’s cultural landscape but we need additional support for our efforts.
In 2020, we aim to expand our monthly offerings of low-cost and free programs to reach more diverse communities across Chicago and to make our events more accessible (e.g., including sign language interpreters at our events). Every donation helps us reach more people with more fun science. We appreciate your support!
