MCMM is Metro Detroit's only seven-day a week street outreach program specifically serving the homeless. Since MCMM's inception, we have serviced individuals directly every single day, regardless of weather or holidays. We pride ourselves in person-to-person contact, delivering nourishment and necessities into abandoned houses, under bridges, overpasses, etc. In 2020 we served meals to over 39,400 individually to those in need on the street and distributed well over 60,000 pieces of personal supplies that included blankets, coats, boot/shoes, clothes, tents, hygiene kits, food packs, tarps, socks, hand warmers, hats, gloves, scarves, mats & pillows, etc.
MCMM was recently appointed to be the Special Initiatives Outreach Team for a groundbreaking pilot program with the City of Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department, Detroit law enforcement and Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. The goals of the pilot program are to: 1) increase quality programming specific to mental health and housing services; 2) increase exits to permanent housing; and 3) more effectively target unsheltered homelessness with cross-sector collaboration. The familiarity with the unsheltered that MCMM has built through our work on the streets has allowed us to build trusting relationships that can be extended to mental health providers so they can directly interact with these individuals while accompanying our staff during street outreach. The same holds true for our ability to facilitate more positive relationships between the unsheltered and law enforcement. This cross- sector collaboration will lead to the unsheltered having their mental health needs met more efficiently; providing support to law enforcement addressing mental illness/addiction issues with the population and supporting more individuals to move towards safe and stable housing. Since March, MCMM has begun working on this pilot program within multiple high 911 call volume Detroit precincts that receive calls regarding individuals with mental illness and homelessness issues, such as in the 3rd Precinct area of the city.
Our "Homeless to Housing" Program helps individuals living on the street and families experiencing inadequate housing navigate the complex and backlogged public housing system in Detroit. We often directly secure, furnish, and subsidize housing for them to ensure comfort, dignity, and long-term stability.
MCMM Mats & Pillow Project for the homeless has recycled over 3 million plastic bags and has distributed over 2000 mats and pillows to our homeless. Our collaboration with over 300 businesses, schools, churches and other organizations continues to grow and inspire others to just be kind!
