Update 11/4/20: I am sad to report that Hania left us last week. Suleman and the kids are bereft, and we are working hard to bring them to a safe life in Canada, in her honor.
Update 3/14/21: We've found a church to sponsor the family! As soon as we meet our goal we can apply, with an expected arrival in Canada mid-2023. Please see below for our updated fundraising goal based on the requirements of new church sponsors.
Meet Hania* and Suleman*, who live with their three beautiful children (aged 10, 14, 15) in Malaysia. Let's get them to Canada:
The kids have big dreams that can only come true in Canada! They want to be a doctor, an engineer, and a pastor. They are devout Christians, forced to flee Pakistan in 2013 due to a false blasphemy charge against Suleman, which carries a death sentence.
- Hania has Stage 4 breast cancer. We've raised funds for her treatment, and now we need to get her to Canada for access to better care.
- Suleman is diabetic, and struggles to get the medication he needs to survive; in Canada his health care will be covered.
- The kids are always hungry. In Malaysia Suleman can't work legally and struggles to put food on the table; in Canada Suleman will be able to work and sustain them.
- They live in constant fear of the frequent immigrant crackdowns in Malaysia—Suleman would be arrested, possibly deported, which risks being caught and tried for blasphemy in Pakistan.
- The kids study hard and have big dreams that can only come true in Canada. They want to be a doctor, an engineer, and a pastor—but they will never have these opportunities while living in Malaysia. In Canada they will get an excellent education and the world will open up for them.
There is already a team ready to support them. It's a miracle that all of these pieces fell into place for them!
Now all we need are the funds required by the Canadian government to apply for private sponsorship. We're urgently raising money to start the application process, which will take about 2 years.
Please consider donating and sharing with your networks. Thank you!
(*To protect their safety, we changed their names)
This is the story of how they've survived—and their hope of starting a new life in a safe place.
Hania had some complications after her mastectomy in August.
They fled because of a false blasphemy charge against Suleman, which carries a death sentence in Pakistan. The charge came from a contractor he hired and demanded to be paid more than the agreed upon price. The contractor stalked them and threatened to kidnap the children. When he charged Suleman with blasphemy, they had no choice but to flee.
In Malaysia, Suleman is not allowed to work legally and struggles to keep his family safe. Before covid, he would take any under-the-table job he could get—usually unloading trucks—but the virus dried up the jobs. Sometimes he is able to do admin work for his church, but it doesn't pay the bills. Hania was a teacher in Pakistan, but can't work now due to illness.
They cannot make ends meet, even while sharing a small apartment with another family. The kids are always hungry.
This is "N," age 10 during his exams this summer. And they have big dreams! They study hard in school and they want to be a doctor, an engineer, and a pastor—but they will never have these opportunities while living as refugees in Malaysia.
Suleman and Hania want their kids to have a better education and live free from oppression. That is why they wanted to live in Canada, even before Hania was diagnosed with cancer—now they are racing to get there so Hania can receive world-class treatment.
They see Canada as their best chance to survive.
A church in British Columbia will support this family when they arrive.
We are raising the amount needed to support them for one year while they become self-sufficient. Suleman works very hard, is extremely resourceful, and will no doubt find successful work in Canada.
Time is passing and they need this money urgently.
Update 3/14/21: The estimates below assumed the sponsors would require the minimum amount set by Canada. However, we've since found new sponsors who are based in Toronto, where rents are high. They also won't accept in-kind donations. Our updated goal is:
- 1 year living expenses: US$24,050
- Admin fee for application: US$200
- 2.2% fee to this website: $530
- Total: $24,780
