Save Injured and Orphaned Howler Monkeys in Costa Rica!

Saving Howler Monkeys Together is a nationwide project that provides successful rewilding for orphaned, rescued, and rehabilitated howler monkeys in Costa Rica. To accomplish this, the program gives medical care, enrichment, and nurturing of skills howler monkeys need to ensure a successful release back into the wild.

Saving Howler Monkeys Together receives injured monkeys and orphans too young to survive in the wild. Although we had been caring for rescued monkeys for years, the program was started to improve our release capabilities, especially for rescued baby monkeys.

The program started in 2023

Deforestation, electrocution, vehicle collisions, and climate change are some of the Dangers Howler Monkeys Face in Costa Rica:

Human activities such as agriculture, logging, and urbanization also bring them into closer contact with humans, increasing the risk of conflicts, including electrocution on power lines and vehicle collisions. Climate change further impacts their survival by altering their ecosystems and disrupting their food sources. These cumulative threats make protecting and conserving howler monkeys and their habitats crucial to ensure their long-term survival.

PHASE I OF THE PROGRAM:

Help us Raise $23,500 for food, enrichment, staffing, enclosures, and medical care

During phase I, Toucan Rescue Ranch will take the current group of howler monkeys rescued in 2022 and 2023 until the first troop is ready for reintroduction into the rainforest. During this process, our Animal Care team plans to evolve the program as they learn more about hand-rearing and releasing howler monkeys. (Once the first troop has been released, we will update the project's detailed activities and budget for Phase II.)

There have been nine howler monkeys that have been in the program thus far. These individuals are juveniles or older.  The decision to accept more monkeys will depend on the howler monkey's condition and space to join the current group.

The current group will be released as one or two troops by the end of 2023. The Release Site team will observe the first troop rewilded for at least two months before the second troop is released.

Toucan Rescue Ranch will have one intern whose priority is the Saving Howler Monkeys Together program. This intern will be accepted with experience under the guidance of one professional adviser to review our planned program and provide feedback.

Fundraising for this project phase will include equipment purchase and the program cost for the current group of howler monkeys.
