Challenge format
If 175 donors give to the School of Science on March 14, Dyann Wirth PhD ’78 will make a $50,000 gift.
If an additional 175 donors give that day, Dyann Wirth PhD ’78 will make another gift of $50,000, for a total of $100,000 for the School of Science!

About the School of Science
The MIT School of Science’s interdisciplinary programs train students to explore and understand living systems at all levels, including molecules, cells, organisms, and their interactions. Our students learn, develop, and apply approaches in molecular and cellular biology, computational biology, genetics, and biochemistry. Research focuses on fundamental and applied problems in the life sciences, including translational medicine. Our training programs provide students with a rigorous and foundational education along with the research and communication skills required for successful careers as scientists, scholars, and leaders across a variety of industries.
Undergraduate support
The MIT School of Science remains a global leader in addressing fundamental questions about our world, including detecting and curing disease, preserving our planet and its climate systems, creating sustainable energy sources, and developing the technology of the future. The School of Science provides each of its undergraduates with an understanding of the basic elements of biology, brain and cognitive science, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and planetary science. Some of our most famous faculty members, including several Nobel Prize winners, are also some of the best teachers of our first-year subjects.
Graduate support
Support for our graduate students is a critical priority in the School of Science and across the Institute. Graduate students are the lifeblood of the research that takes place across the life sciences, and providing our students with the resources they need to be successful in their education, research, and careers remains at the core of our mission. Supporting the Graduate Program of your choice, or one of several cross-disciplinary graduate programs, will have a tremendous and meaningful impact on our students and their research.
In addition to being prepared to enter research, industry, or academia, our students―graduate and undergraduate―often pursue medical, law, business, or cross-curricular degrees across a variety of disciplines and are uniquely prepared to make creative contributions to the world.
As Dean Nergis Mavalvala PhD ’97 puts it: “Now, more than ever, we need the best scientists who will partner with engineers, educators, economists, thought leaders, policymakers, and sustainability advocates―making connections across MIT’s schools and colleges to make a better world.”
None of this would be possible without your support. Your partnership remains vital as we chart the path forward for our students and the Institute, and, with your help, continue to fulfill our mission. We, therefore, hope you will support the department, fund, or designation of your choice within the School of Science during the MIT 24-Hour Challenge on March 14.
