Ossabaw Island's Heritage Preserve designation is the highest level of land use protection in Georgia. Yet, in 2020, that protection faced an unprecedented threat: a coordinated effort to allow portions of heritage preserves to be sold to private owners for a wide array of private uses.
The Ossabaw Island Foundation staff and volunteers rallied our partners and supporters to ensure that the Heritage Preserve remained the strongest land preservation tool in the state, and that the integrity of Ossabaw and other Heritage Preserves would not be destroyed by private interests.
