Real Steel is a film that is bit of a change of pace for director Shawn Levy, who is known for comedies like the Night at the Museum movies and Date Night. In Real Steel, he is directing a special effects action-drama with a really good story.
Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie, a former professional boxer who now makes a living with fighting robots. Something I noticed here that I have in other Levy films is how the lead character has his life out of order or that something is missing. For Charlie, it is not having a way to make money in his career after his robot is destroyed at a carnival. After this, he finds out that he has to take care of his son temporarily after the mother dies. Now Charlie is stuck with a son he hardly knows, and has to take with him while he goes to his fights. After another robot of Charlie's is destroyed, his son Max find one that he wants, named Atom, who they take around the country to fight other robots.
Jackman is great in the lead role and is great at showing anger, frustration, irritation, and be a likable guy. This performance is one of his best. I would say it's right up there with his performances in the X-Men movies, The Fountain, and Australia. Dakota Goyo plays Charlie's son Max. Goyo does a good job of showing that Max is a chip off the old block. Evangeline Lilly plays Bailey Tallet, who owns a gym that Charlie has lived and trained at since his childhood. She is a wonder as the one person who will always be behind Charlie on whatever he does. It was nice to see Anthony Mackie in another film as he plays a bookie and manager who puts fights together. Mackie does a good job, but shows that he has done better. It was also nice to see Kevin Durand in another film with Hugh Jackman as a mean Texan who Charlie owes money too.
The special effects and sound effects are all well done, as that was the most important part of this film. Shawn Levy is no stranger to films that call for important visual effects and his crew does an amazing job, especially with all of the robot fights.
The idea of a movie about fighting robots sounds crazy, but it works. While fighting robots is Levy's primary focus in Real Steel, that is not the only thing this film is about. It is also about a father spending time with his estranged son, making money, and a man who becomes a better man throughout the film. I respect Mr. Levy for showing that there is a story to be told here. Levy proves here how much he has grown as a filmmaker, and that he can do more than family comedies.
