"Listen, friend. I don't want you killing birds...You must love them because many of them come from far away and they are tired, hungry, and thirsty." - Abigail Yam Coh, age 11
Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a paradise for birds and bird enthusiasts with over 400 species recorded to date! One thing is clear to people who live and visit the UP - we LOVE our birds!
Whether here year-round or migrating with the seasons (like some of the folks we all know), the diversity of birds that visit the area is unlike anywhere else - from Gray Jay and Pleated Woodpeckers, to the elusive Yellow Rail, the popular Piping Plover and of course, Bald Eagles. The UP is a vital stopover for migrating birds and waterfowl of all kinds, and our dense forests and healthy waters provide habitat to them year-round.Piping Plovers at Melodus Preserve

When we protect land, we protect birds. UP Land Conservancy specifically protects bird habitats across the UP in places like the Melodus Preserve, where Lake Superior shoreline is home to threatened nesting Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus), and the 65 acres of the Ford Eagle Preserve where nesting habitat for two Bald Eagle species (Northern and Southern) is protected forever.
Birds are everywhere, even in the "Big City" - UP Land Conservancy has a new self-guided birding trail at the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve where you can learn about the birds spotted in the preserve and their special habitats within the protected Preserve.
The best way to save our declining bird population is to protect their habitats. Donating as a part of team Bird Lovers will help us protect land for migrating and resident birds and waterfowl in the UP!
