The UP Land Conservancy currently protects 6,184 acres of land across 12 counties in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. But what does 6,184 acres really mean to you? Let’s look closer at just the trees in just one acre: One acre of protected forest in the Upper Peninsula can support about 40-60 mature trees. Together, those trees will remove about 2.6 tons of carbon from the atmosphere per year, and the clean air that they exude is circulated and breathed in by humans and other creatures across the entire globe!
When you take into account that 85% of the Upper Peninsula is forested - that's a lot of clean oxygen that you and I are responsible for protecting for the world.
It's not just the trees that are working hard to ensure this entire ecosystem stays together - all plants play a role! From filtering water, producing oxygen, stabilizing soil, and to providing much of the food to animals in the area, we owe it to our 'buds' to support the leafed beings of the UP!
UPLC has started a new program we're calling "Forests for the Future," a forest restoration program that uses experimental and extremely selective conventional forestry to restore almost 1,500 acres of our Leafy Buds back to healthy, bio- and age-diverse habitats that can more easily withstand and recover from sudden change and disturbances, like floods, new pests, and diseases. With your help, we will use these forests as educational sites to help other land owners learn how to manage their forests through the changes we're experiencing up here.
Donating to the Leafy Buds is a vote to protect the forests that are here today so that we can encourage them to be old growth forests of the future!
