"Even with your eyes closed, it's easy to tell where you are. The air is heavy, humid, and pulsing with sound. Hoards of insects wriggle from the surface of the water and buzz around you on new wings ... If you like what you hear, wait until you open your eyes! A marsh is as rich and full of wildlife as it sounds." (excerpt from Northwoods Wildlife by Janine Benyus)

Wetlands are areas where water and land meet. PC C.Burnett for UPLC  They are areas are that are crucial and in many ways, and can be considered the basis for life in the Upper Peninsula - wetlands, swamps, and marshes provide constant flood storage, groundwater recharge,  water filtration, as well as refuge and nesting areas for many animals . Acre for acre, wetlands are thought to produce more wildlife and plants than any Michigan habitat and are utilized by mammals, birds, nearly all reptiles and every amphibian.

Photo by C.BurnettBy ensuring the permanent protection of wetlands, UPLC protects the homes and breeding areas of species that are otherwise under threat from pollution and habitat loss including Salamanders, Frogs, Turtles, Muskrats, and Beavers, and the many plants and animals that make use of these intermediary areas across the UP.

By donating as a Swamp Fellow you are voting for the continued protection of these incredibly rich and sensitive areas which contribute to the beauty and vitality of our shared home!
