Freedom Inc's Mission:

Freedom, Inc. (FI) is a Black and Southeast Asian non-profit organization that works with low- to no-income communities of color in Madison, WI. Our mission is to achieve social justice through coupling direct services with leadership development and community organizing that will bring about social, political, cultural, and economic change resulting in the end of violence against women, gender-non-conforming and transgender folks, and children within communities of color. FI works to challenge the root causes of violence, poverty, racism and discrimination. Our belief is that people who are most affected by these issues must have voice, power, resources and choice, in order for true social change to happen.

Shea Hansen is a junior at UW Madison majoring in Social Welfare and Psychology. She currently interns with Freedom Inc. as part of the Community Powerbuilding Team. She is really interested in the nonprofit sector and also does work with adults with disabilities.

Why Shea works with FI: I am working with FI because I thought it would be a really great opportunity to work with such a reputable organization in the community. FI teaches me so much and I have so much to learn about my community and the ways I can help.

Canaan Odeh is a junior at UW Madison majoring in Political Science. He is currently an Administrative Intern.

Why Canaan works with FI: I am working with Freedom Inc. because they have demonstrated that their work is crucial to the needs of our community. As a high school student, I was able to observe the inequalities that Freedom Inc. sought to dismantle. Now as a college student, I recognized that I needed to be part of a movement that reflects my values about how a community should be.
