Birds of a Feather Rescue

A nonprofit organization

After working with exotic birds for over 40 years I began to see a real need for the rescue.  These are magnificent creatures that want and deserve all the love they can get.

People buy these birds but never learn to properly care for them.  We get them after they have plucked themselves out over being stressed or after they have been abused or mistreated.  For example we have a blue front Amazon that is 68 years old.  He was beaten literally with a wood perch when he didn't do what the owner wanted.  He was given to a woman locally here and she brought him here.  He is in rehab right now with a friend of BOAFR.  Blue loves women but has a deep seated hatred for men because of what happened to him.  Blue is only one of many that have come here.

Rehabilitation can take a long time depending on the condition of the bird.  I have an Umbrella Cockatoo that is registered with the California Service Animal Registry.  He now visits Nursing Homes all over the area.  He has to kiss whoever gets near him.  His rehab took over 2 years.

We have macaws that were so stressed in the previous homes that they plucked so much they damaged the feather follicle and will never see feathers again. they are permanent friends here.  they are handled every day but they will never be re-homed.

These birds didn't ask to be brought out of their habitat and now if they are returned they would most likely starve to death.  We have over 100 birds here now and are rehabilitating them for their forever home.

We have re-homed over 300 birds to date and continue to accept birds from all over.  We take in anything from finches to Macaws.  No matter what the case we will take them in and rehab them and find them loving homes.  Once we have them started well we have fosters who take the birds for a period of time then move them to another foster to socialize the birds.  We want them to accept being handled by anybody.

Here at the rescue we have training classes for anybody that wants to own a bird and is willing to take the class to see that come true.

I have spent the last 5 years financing this organization out of pocket.  But now I am asking for help with donations to hopefully grow and expand the organization to accept more birds and see them in new loving homes.

These birds get the best veterianry care from the East Petaluma Animal Hospital.  Dr. David Rupiper is amazing with these birds and he is our go to vet for all adopted birds also.  If a bird is adopted out of the area they new adoptees are required to contact Dr. Rupiper for a recommended veterinarian in their area.
