The Need 

In Mathare Valley, an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, more than 18,000 students attend 75 community-based schools. However, these schools do not receive government funding or support. Most teachers are untrained, classrooms lack basic supplies, and education quality is low. Just 20 of the schools offer Standard 8 – due to lack of trained teachers and strong leadership. 

What does this mean? 

If you were a child in Mathare Valley, you would have a 4 in 10 chance of completing primary school and transitioning to secondary school. And if you graduate secondary school, only 1 in 5 of your peers who began Form 1 with you will complete secondary schooling. 

Without champion teachers, visionary principals, and engaged community leaders, this trend will continue leaving thousands of children with bright futures behind.
