Tioga's Fundraiser for Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Center
In 2017, Fresno's only LGBTQ Center closed its doors for good. For nearly two years, the community was without a safe place to gather, or get access to resources from. In 2019, Fresno EOC Sanctuary and Support Services answered the call and opened the LGBTQ Resource Center to provide a safe space for the community.
Over the course of the pandemic, we were fortunate to grow our staff from a team of two to a team of six. This allows us to tackle some of the most pressing issues in our community such as housing and food insecurity, mental healthcare, gender-affirming providers, and more. Whether it be virtual or in-person services, we connect LGBTQ folks to resources they need such as substance use treatment, mental health services, legal help, peer support groups, as well as many in-house programs Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission has to offer. We are constantly working towards providing a more equitable landscape for the many intersections of the queer community of Fresno.
Our conversations and work centers on providing our LGBTQ friends with a safe place that will become a staple in Fresno County. And because of that, we have heard and felt the needs of our Fresno County community loud and clear: what they need is funding in order to be themselves.
Trans and Gender Nonconforming Medical Needs Fund
Kelli (he/him) got the surprise of his life when a social worker brought him into the LGBTQ+ Resource Center for the first time. The social worker made an appointment to get them their first ever, brand new binder to alleviate his gender dysphoria. He was provided with multiple size options, and allowed to try the binders on in the accessible, gender-inclusive bathrooms. When Kelli came out to show how well it fit under his clothes, he exclaimed, " I look like a real man!"
To which the center's outreach specialist and his social worker responded in unison: "You ARE a real man."
Kelli's story (and many more like his) is one of the many reasons why the Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center has decided to create a Trans and Gender Nonconforming (GNC) Medical Needs Fund.
How these funds will help our community
From buying chest binders, to travel expenses for having to go out of town for gender-affirming services and surgeries, or money to cover bills while they recover and are out of work; this fund will help relieve the financial burden that is associated with transitioning in the Central Valley. We plan to raise $10,000 with this campaign to start this fund, with hopes to grow it over time as our community grows. Every dollar raised will mean more physically-available resources at the Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center, to help youth and the gender-exploring young at heart. PLUS– every donation will help us compete for additional cash prizes during Give Out Day, June 30th 2021!
Your donation can help us win up to $10,000!!!
