For nearly a century, the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society (MACS) has been a place of safety and compassion for animals who have nowhere else to turn. Since 1935, MACS has remained steadfast in its mission to protect stray, injured, abused, and abandoned animals through sheltering, veterinary care, humane education, and advocacy for meaningful animal welfare legislation. Each year, thousands of animals pass through our doors, and for many of them, MACS represents their last chance at care, dignity, and a future.
As the needs of animals in the City of Detroit continue to grow, MACS has had to thoughtfully reevaluate how we operate as a shelter. Because we do not deny animals based on breed, medical condition, or behavior, we now request appointments for owner surrenders. This approach allows us to responsibly manage capacity, ensure the safety and well being of the animals already in our care, and preserve space for urgent and emergency intakes. While we request a surrender donation to help offset care costs, no animal is ever refused due to an owner’s inability to contribute.
Each year, MACS facilitates the transfer of more than 950 animals to trusted rescue partners and helps over 530 animals find permanent, loving homes through adoption. We are constantly building new partnerships and expanding our rescue network to increase lifesaving outcomes and create more opportunities for animals to thrive.
Beyond sheltering, MACS is deeply committed to keeping pets with the families who love them whenever possible. We distribute donated pet food to more than 800 low-income households and, when supplies allow, provide straw, crates, dog houses along with other items to support responsible pet care. MACS further supports the community through low-cost veterinary services, sponsored spay and neuter surgeries, and assistance with emergency medical care.
MACS is guided by a board of directors made up entirely of experienced, hands-on animal caregivers. Their dedication ensures that every decision is grounded in compassion, ethics, and practical animal welfare expertise. As part of our commitment to humane care, MACS offers euthanasia services—by donation—for animals who are suffering or at the end of life. These services are provided without regard to an owner’s financial circumstances, because compassion should never be conditional.
