Southern Indian Health Council

Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. is a Native American nonprofit organization committed to protecting and improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health of our American Indian community. Our organization began as a satellite operation of the Indian Health Council in Pauma Valley. Initially, we operated out of trailers on the Sycuan reservation, offering outreach and referral services to southern San Diego tribes. In November 1982, we incorporated as a nonprofit, public benefit corporation, and moved to the Barona reservation shortly thereafter. In late 1987, our Board of Directors acquired private land in Alpine, which was placed into a “federal trust.” 

SIHC has undergone tremendous growth over the years. Today, we serve a seven-member tribal consortium that includes Barona, Campo, Ewiiaapaayp, Jamul, La Posta, Manzanita, and Viejas. We are an accredited and Federally Qualified Health Center operating out of a modern facility. Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. also chartered the first Native Boys & Girls Club in California, the Boys & Girls Club Kumeyaay Nation Wellness, which regularly assists 200+ children through myriad programs including STEM curriculums, tutoring, school break programs, and field trips.  In addition to offering medical, dental, and pharmacy services, we heavily impact the community through our Kumeyaay Family Services programs such as adult and youth behavioral health initiatives, Indian child social services, an outpatient access mobile, and domestic violence and abuse case management- just to name a few.
