Alexandria Families For Safe Streets (AFSS) with its umbrella organization, Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NoVA FSS), brings the community together to create safe streets for all people to walk and bike.
Every step matters! Help us make our streets safer for everyone—walkers, bikers, and drivers alike. Our goal is to raise $8,000 to fund education and advocacy efforts that will improve pedestrian safety in our community. Read below to find out about our mission and the work we do for our community. Our Impact in 2024:

As an important grassroots all-volunteer run organization we have over 1,500 members who are crash survivors, family members of crash fatalities and concerned citizens to bring about change on our streets.
- This past year we educated over 2,000 students through our school outreach program to elementary and middle schools as well as high school driver’s education students.
- We collected over 2,800 entries to our "Near Miss/ Dangerous Locations" survey which collects data on dangerous incidents and creates a map comparing locations to historical crash data. We have partnered with Virginia Tech Graduate School of Affairs and Urban Planning with this improved design and overlay including GIS mapping. This anonymous data is shared with local police and street engineering with the City.
- Our Legislative Advocacy work included testifying in Richmond to the Virginia General Assembly on the 4 following bills:
- (S 136) ISA bill - Del Patrick Hope
- (SB 1233) Stop Sign Camera bill - Sen A. Williams-Graves
- (SB 1466) Vulnerable Road User bill - Sen Adam Ebbin
- (SB 1024) Voluntary electronic contributions at DMV to Virginia Highway Safety
