Making a Difference in the Lives of Foster Teens

This community service program provides foster teens and McKinney Vento Homeless Youth graduating from high school with large backpacks filled with needed supplies to help them begin life on their own. We used to provide duffel bags (hence the name), but young people prefer backpacks.

Each graduate receives a large laptop backpack with lots of needed compartments and a USB charging port. These well-made backpacks are filled with items that will enable them to set up a viable living situation on their own.  The bags are filled with a bullet blender, tool kit, first-aid kit, hygiene kits, kitchen tools, blanket, solar phone charging bank, pillow, dishes, towels, and gift cards.

FY 2022-2023 Statistics for Operation Duffel Bag

This year, each backpack was valued at more than $450.  The program helped 45 students, took 200+ volunteer hours to complete, and had a $18,850 budget.

Our Assisteens donated $500, and our members donated $483. $100 in gift cards was donated by Costco and $5,080 in Kohl's cash came from OSB.

Our volunteers experience a genuine sense of giving back to the community by helping these wonderful and deserving teens.
