#GivingTuesday is December 1st. Join the Global Movement for Giving and support FAHM's initiatives. Help us to empower, aid and support Haitian Midwives in their daily battle to decrease Haiti's high maternal and infant mortality rate, and also to put an end to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
November 25th was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Haitian midwives are committed and dedicated to becoming part of the solution to end GBV. Midwives are key points of access to health care for GBV survivors. They also serve as advocates for women and girls, contribute greatly to prevention efforts, and are community educators. FAHM is delighted to partner with them in the fight against GBV in Haiti.
Combating GBV must also focus on outreach and education of the public. Thanks to your continued support we are able to host a four-part live Lunch and Learn Series that discusses and highlights the issue of gender-based violence in Haiti's cultural context. We are thrilled to present a panel of Haitian experts spanning a variety of professions, from medical doctors, activists, psychologists and more. Who better to tell our narrative than Haitian women and men who have dedicated their careers to stop gender-based violence in Haiti. Empowering Midwives for a stronger Haiti

Haiti, a country with a population of approximately 11 million, is lacking available and accessible health care (personnel and resources). There is a dire need to increase the number of professionally educated health care workers to provide competent, comprehensive, compassionate care to its population. Since 1997 Haiti has invested in educating midwives. Midwives have been proven to offer the most cost-effective reproductive health care. According to WHO (World Health Organization), ICM (International Confederation of Midwives) and the State of the World’s Midwifery report, two thirds of all maternal and newborn deaths could be averted with midwifery care. Midwives could deliver 87% of all essential sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health services. Midwives are usually the only health care provider a woman will seek out, not only for childbirth, but for all her health-related needs.
Life in a developing Caribbean nation is unpredictable with natural disasters and currently with this Coronavirus pandemic. We need to stay the course and continue to help Haitian midwives to do the amazing work that they do each and every day with compassion, knowledge and strength. No matter what goes on in the world, what we do know for sure is that babies are being born. Now more than ever it is important to assure safe, effective and respectful care for the three basic needs that never change: Pregnancy, family planning and gender-based violence services.
