Panza isn't alone anymore

Update posted 3 years ago

Panza was under treatment for over 6 months thanks to you!

Unfortunately as COVID hit the world, there was a shortage of drugs in Guinea and his treatment had to be stopped.

A new sonogram was perform to check if the blood clot has reduced, but we were very disappointed to see that it hadn't.

The medicines were not helping.  We decided to focus on his quality of life...

Panza was moved next to Coco earlier this year so he could have access, in turn to the small but secure fence!

Happy boy in trees!

Unexpectedly, in April, our beloved Coco passed away. Bobo was moved next to Panza in June 2021.

They got to know each other through the cage first and in September, they were united (inside at first).

Stay tune for additional update!

Thank you for all your support to PANZA and all the other CCC chimpanzees.

At only 15 years old, PANZA could die of an heart attack at any moment if he fails to receive treatment.

One morning in May 2018, Panza passed out after only some very mild activity. His heart had stopped, but luckily we were able to intervene and restart its beating.

We isolated him to limit his activity and stress and placed him on dietary supplements and vitamins.

It took us over a year to secure an ultrasound machine and a veterinarian who could perform a cardiac ultrasound safely.

Panza was anesthetized in October 2019 and the findings were dumbfounding.

Panza has a large blood clot in his heart.

We don't know the reasons for this clot (accident, tumor, congenital...) but without treatment, we know that this blood clot will block his blood flow and he will die of a heart attack. At 15 years old this chimp is still a teenager, not even having reached full adulthood.

The blood clot can be seen in the left corner of the image (the round white circle), blocked for now by the valves, but clearly being pushed by the blood flow up to get out of the heart's chamber into the artery, where it would get stuck and block the flow.

Thanks to the consult of a cardiologist and his recommendations, there is hope!

A combination of two drugs, Atorvastatin and Xarelto, could potentially dissolve this blood clot. The treatment will need to be implemented for at least 12 months before the blood clot will reduce in size.

The treatment can be found in the Guinean capital city, Conakry, but it is very expensive.

We need your help to treat PANZA.

For $250 per month, you can save Panza's life.

PANZA is waiting alone for his treatment

Panza is an orphan. He was confiscated in Conakry as a baby and arrived at the Chimpanzee Conservation Center in Guinea in 2006 when he was about a year old.

He has been living with his group for years. But not anymore.... For his safety we had to isolate him as he is a nervous chimp.  Due to his heart condition,  efforts and stress have to be limited.

Over the last year, his growth has stopped, he is out of breath quickly, has lost weight and lost most of his hair.

We need you to save his life and giving him a future with a group of chimpanzee.
